I've increasingly discovered that looking away from the camera works better for me.

Not only does it show off my vague and amateurish attempts at make-up, it also stops me being blinded by the flash, squinting and then looking ten times as drunk as I really am (given that I'm usually quite drunk when photos are being taken of me, this is not a good thing)
